I did not experience the election as a gut punch as you did. It unfolded just as I expected after twenty years of listening to and engaging with divergent voices in an open, respectful way. In my experience, liberal friends met modest critiques of their party with derision and bully shaming, and conservative friends are naive about the darker forces at play in the world. Though a correction is needed in our politics, the next few years will be unruly, so before employing passion, I would make sure that it is rooted in something deeper than one's self.
